HOCKEY IN THE SUMMERTIMEAustralian's will be hoping that 2012 is a year best remembered by our two National hockey teams winning GOLD at the 2012 London Olympic Games. The next 6 months is a crucial time in the lead-up to the Olympic Games. A busy match schedule for the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras will give the coaching staff the chance to fine tune their Olympic Squad and give each National Squad player the opportunity to play against the best hockey nations in the world and try and secure a place in history, by representing their country at the Olympic Games. February, March and April 2012 will showcase both the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras on Australian soil against The Netherlands, Argentina, Korea and the USA. As part of the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras London preparations, the players will get the opportunity to play matches on a blue turf, identical to the colour turf they'll be playing on in London. The blue turf at Lemnos Shenton Park in Perth is the first blue pitch laid in Australia. Click on the link below to get the schedule of games.

| The latest edition of the Suburban Lions Hockey Club newsletter "The Pride" is now available. It contains info about the new committee, uniform, coaching, grades, Shenton turf and more. We aim to publish one of these each quarter, so if you have any suggestions, photos or articles, send these to Lynne at manno@bigpond.net.au. The colours are deliberately bland until we decide on our new club colours. We'd also love to hear from you if you have a suggestion for a new newsletter name. Happy reading. | ||||||

| Blog Entry No 2: 16 November 2011 Ok, this blog thing is harder to stick to than initially thought so here is a big catch up! So what I have been up to in the last 7 weeks since I last posted… Firstly though, I'm not in Margaret River despite what the above says, I'm actually in the quiet, quaint and 'unique' Manjimup! I have tried to go running regularly in the first couple of months however I had numerous issues varying from being attacked by magpies and other birds, getting lost and needing to get directions home before it got dark and also running further than I realised and being too tired to run all the way back! I decided to find a different option for exercise with so many bad experiences! I have joined a gym in Manjimup and also the local squash club to stay fit in the off season. What are you doing to stay fit in the off-season? The squash club has 5 courts and is great fun twice a week and keeps me fit. I used to play a lot of squash in England before I came to Australia. Squash is fantastic for fitness and it is also nice to play an individual sport where it is one on one against an opponent. I was also fortunate enough to be invited by Cam Fosbery (RSL Men's player) to run the Blackwood 12k part of the marathon in Boyup Brook, it was a great event however I was not informed there were so many hills to challenge on not just concrete, but also gravel and grass. I was fortunate enough on the end of the race to run through a couple of cow pats so the journey home was a little smelly with no change of clothes! One weekend I went East to Walpole and Denmark, the views are beautiful but there wasn't really much to do there however I did go to the 'Valley of the Giants' and the 'Treetop Walk' on suspended bridges about 60-70 metres high by the canopy. The only thing I didn't like was the swaying bridges as it was very windy and scary (another example of the Englishman being a Princess!) Another weekend I went West to Margaret River and Dunsborough which was amazing, they are such beautiful places and had great fun. I bought far too much fudge and enjoyed a wide range of breweries and wineries in the area thanks to my friend from England volunteering to drive! So… I should probably talk about work rather than all the fun things I have been doing in and around work! At Chestnut Grove I have been pruning and bottling the wine as well as learning how to taste wine correctly and appreciate the tastes and textures on the palate. Bottling is a good experience as you see how the wine gets transferred from the tanks to bottles with 3 jobs, loading the bottles on the conveyor belt, 'capping' (putting lids on the bottles), and labelling and packing the bottles in boxes. All fairly simple but it is nice to give my hands a rest from all the pruning! The weather apart from the last 2-3 days has reminded me of an English summer in that it rains a lot, is very grey and is slightly humid! I regularly look at the Perth weather and see that it is significantly better 3 hours north! Right, I have rambled on too much and don't want to bore you to death! However, before I go I wanted to talk about the summer league hockey. I have been to one session on a Friday and can't praise enough how well it is organised. The effort Club Members (Hugh Singe, Linda Hart, Mr Wishaw on the bar, Vicky with her gourmet wraps, all the umpires and the Luscombes, but to name a few) put in is phenomenal even in the off-season. We must remember how important volunteering for the club is and on a personal note I will endeavour to do anything I can for the club next season in such an exciting time for the club. I am looking forward to being at summer hockey this Friday (18thNovember) and hope to see you all there. | ||||||

| Champagne Extravaganza or a bloody stupid idea? | ||||||
| By Noel - 02-11-2011 | ||||||
| Subs women were treated to an amazing pre-cocktail party experience. An exclusive champagne tasting! The tour included Bollinger, Ruinart, Perrier Jouet and Billecart. None of the woemen will ever be satisfied at ordinary, tired, run-of-the-mill wine tasting now. Their lives have changed forever. Once they were satisfied with standard bubbly wine, but No! Their palates have been titillated and educated and sophisticated to the point where their significant others have to now spend ten times as much for the same result! A bloody stupid idea! From the significantly financially poorer current and future significant others of the subs team. PS: Feedback from the tour leader Jamie was ' Those girls know how to put bubbles away'! |
